Chief Chick Comments

At the beginning of the movie (which is based on the 1983 bestseller by Mark Helprin) I thought I was seeing a romance until I realized that actually I was seeing a Fantasy with romantic overtones. Good and evil are personified and each human is blessed with one miracle. As good souls die, they go to be a new star in heaven. Beverly Penn is the daughter of a wealthy newspaper owner. She has consumption and must sleep outside their mansion in a tent in order to keep her temperature low enough. At age 21 she has never been kissed or experienced much of life because of her illness. When confronted by Peter as he is trying to rob her house, she is remarkably calm and offers him tea. They fall in love and this fairy tale then cover 100 years to tie the loose threads together. You must suspend logic….it just won't work here.
