Fascinating look at screenwriter, Herman Mankiewicz as he writes the screenplay for Citizen Kane for Orson Welles, who purportedly made no writing contribution but who shared credit with Mankiewicz when it won the Oscar in 1942. As an alcoholic, when he was drunk, Mankiewicz either passed out or said the most indiscreet but true things to those in power including Louis B Mayer and William Randolph Hearst. Mankiewicz befriended Marion Davies, played very well by Amanda Seyfried, who for many years lived with Hearst. They never married as Hearst's wife would not give him a divorce. Several scenes were filmed at Hearst Castle which many of us have visited in California. Oldman is terrific and is nominated for a Golden Globe as is Seyfried. 4 more nominations for the movie and others. Interesting look at the writing of one of the most famous movies ever-Citizen Kane, said by many to be the best movie ever made.

For the life of me, I tried and tried to like this movie. I usually adore Gary Oldman but just couldn't get into it and his character was a charmless drunk who for some reason was thought to have genius writing skills. Typically I like and can appreciate movies that are made in the b&w genre of decades ago, and technically speaking, this movie did a fantastic job at that. But I had to force myself to finish it.
