Chief Chick Comments

During the final years of Queen Anne's reign (Stuart Queen from 1702-1714), this film proposes a competition between Lady Sarah Marlborough (married to the first Duke of Marlborough, at whose estate Winston Churchill was born many, many years later) and Abigail, Sarah's cousin who has fallen on hard times because of her dead father's gambling away their estate and even his daughter. While there is not a lot of substantiation to the more salacious parts of this story or even the fight between the two cousins, Queen Anne did have a very sad life. She gave birth to 17 children all of whom died in the first two years of life except Lady Mary who died at 22. The reaction to The Favorite is twofold: lots of viewers love it; lots of viewers dislike it. As for me, I love the acting, the costumes, the scenery - both interior and exterior, and the music. The detail is fantastic! The story while interesting often gives TMI (too much information, for example: do you want to see people throwing up etc all the time). The end of the story is a bit tough to describe. When one of you figures it out, please let me know! p.s. As of this writing Olivia Colman has won a Golden Globe for her performance.

The scenery, sets, costumes, cinematography is stunning. It puts the viewer right into the time period. The palace intrigue and mental/physical state of the Queen is juicy! I agree with Chief Chick that the ending is confusing. Really, this is the ending? It is still an interesting, good film. Glad I saw it.
