Chief Chick Comments

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is superb in many ways. The Scully family dynamics are much more interesting with two competing sons and two very different daughters. (These inter- and intrafamily dynamics are very realistic and remind me of growing up with very different siblings and learning to adapt to new social environments.) The computer-generated imagery (CGI) is amazing, as real actors and props are seamlessly integrated with the fantasy sea creatures and Na'vi natives. The action sequences are dynamic and realistic without being gory or disturbing. And finally the spiritual connections between the Na'vi and the sea are uplifting and inspiring. To quote one of the main characters Tsireya, "The way of water has no beginning and no end. Our hearts beat in the womb of the world. Water connects all things, life to death, darkness to light." Although the movie is over three hours long, it felt much shorter as it kept my attention so well. The older daughter becomes increasingly absorbed in the oneness of Nature. The younger son always tries to prove himself and is off on many adventures. And the human boy Spider must thread his life between the Na'vi, where he spends most of his time, and his biological father, the evil Col. Quaritch.
