Chief Chick Comments

Juliette Binoche is wonderful in this movie set in 1849 on a small cold island off the coast of Canada which is governed by the French. The Captain who adores his wife, Madame La, indulges her desire to take on the condemned man, Neel, as her protégé. She teaches him to garden, to read, helps him marry a local widow who is pregnant by him. All the while the local authorities await the guillotine. But slowly and townspeople come to love Neel who even saves the local tavern and a woman who might die. No one will sign on to be the executioner. Taken from court records, this tragedy unfolds almost magically. I was mesmerized by it. In French with English subtitles.
