Chief Chick Comments

Well, I always look forward to Warren Beatty on screen…even at age of 79. A stellar cast joins him especially in the supporting roles with Candice Bergen as Howard Hughes's secretary, Martin Sheen as his business advisor, Matthew Broderick as a driver, and Annette Bening aka Mrs Beatty as the mother of starlet Marla Mabrey. Lily Collins, Phil Collins daughter, is charming as Marla a young Virginian (taken two ways) who travels to Hollywood with her mother after winning a talent contest. Frank picks them up at the airport and drives them to one of the many houses Howard Hughes owns for the use of his starlets. Unfortunately, no one ever sees Hughes…well hardly ever anyway. According to this screenplay by Beatty, Hughes is already a recluse and a bit wacky. His erratic behavior is cover for the romance beginning to bud between Marla and Frank although both are devout Christians and without stimulant do not misbehave! This films is actually mildly entertaining even though it is not a great effort. I enjoyed it but realize many will find it a bit foolish and disconnected. The sets circa mid century are interesting especially since Hughes stays at the Beverly Hotel bungalows-several of them.
