Jack, Annie and their two young girls arrive in an unidentified Asian Country adjacent to Viet Nam(we later discover) to work on a water project for the country. On their second day, a coup topples the government and gangs of armed insurrectionists kill all Americans they can find as well as those they believe support the toppled government. Jack is out trying to buy a newspaper at the time and sees an American executed. When the blond Jack, played by Owen Wilson, is spotted the mob turns on him. The next hour of the movie covers one day and is one close call, plenty of violence and deaths in succession. Pierce Brosnan plays a company man who greets them initially, but we find out he is British intelligence and tries to help them escape. There is little more to this movie than a man, Jack, and his wife, Annie-ably played by Lake Bell, who do anything required to keep their two very young girls alive. The violence and hatred are quiet believable. Jack and Annie both must commit violent acts to project their children, but unfortunately the film does not take the time or cannot take the time to see the horror they must feel. When one of their children is grabbed by a gunman who seems to be in charge in this particular quarter, you certainly feel horrified. These kids, if they survive, will need years of therapy. The filming is fast paced and the poor Asian city is very, very believable third world. Near the end we find out that "our Countries" according to Pierce Brosnan have interests in this part of the world and scheme to subdue them economically instead of providing the help they so desperately need. A little too simple and negative, but probably fits the story well. First time I have seen Owen Wilson in a thriller and he pretty much nails it. Lake Bell is an athletic and a good counterpart. Fortunately, when one of them breaks down the other brings them back to the moment and the urgent need to save their children. Lots and lots of blood, but the movie kept my interest throughout.
