What a pleasant surprise Mr Holmes, the movie is! Obviously, based on the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mr Holmes takes place shortly after the completion of World War II when Holmes is in his 93rd year. He returns from a trip to Japan to a country home where he has lived for 30 years with various housekeepers and his beloved bee hives. His housekeeper has a young son, Roger, who is very, very bright and comes to adore Mr Holmes. Holmes, it seems, has begun to suffer dementia, and his trip to Japan concerned this malady. Holmes also has begun to write the story of his last case which Roger crept in to read. However, Holmes is having trouble remembering... yet he knows something about the case caused him to stop sleuthing and is causing him some discomfort. In a series of flashbacks we see parts of the original case as well as Holmes's trip to Japan. Ian McKellan is marvelous both as a 60 something detective shortly after World War I as well as the retired, famous Sherlock Holmes in his 90's. You cannot help falling in love with Mils Parker who plays a very precocious Roger. His mother played marvelously by Laura Linney(who somehow manages to look ordinary!) is frightened as Roger becomes closer to the fading Holmes and the care of the bees. A subplot which ultimately becomes important is that something is causing the bees to die. The English countryside, apparently near Dover, is lovely and the cinematography extraordinary. The story is less than straightforward and for anyone who loves mysteries, this is a movie for you. The acting is superb, the story extraordinary, the scenery and cinematography wonderful. I recommend this tale of what the later of years of Sherlock Holmes may have been like. It seems to flow in just the way a real Sherlock Holmes story by Conan Doyle would.
