Ila prepares hot lunch each day to be delivered to her husband at work by Mumbai's "dabbawas" delivery messengers. One day she prepares a special dish, suggested by her " auntie" who lives above her, to rekindle the romance with her husband. The lunchbox is delivered by mistake to Saajan, a lonely widower facing imminent retirement who now must train his replacement at work. The lunchbox returns empty, Ila is excited but realizes that night that someone else has eaten her delicious meal. The next day Ila sends a note explaining the mix-up and the significance of the meal. Saajan is intrigued and sends a note back. The two begin a correspondence that becomes deeper and more intimate. As Ila's marriage continues to drift and Saajan struggles with training his replacement, the two begin to ponder the possibilities of meeting in real life. Watching the lunchbox delivery system is fascinating. Ila and Saajan are spot on as two people seeking a connection with someone, anyone, when life hasn't really gone they way they had hoped. Not a typical romantic comedy.
