Chief Chick Comments

Well, The Lobster is one strange kitty! David's wife leaves him for another man and David must go to the Island where he has 45 days to find a mate/partner. Heterosexual and Homosexual choices are available. You can see the film as just a strange idea taken to the extreme. David, by the way, choses to be a Lobster if he fails to find a partner since Lobsters live 100 years and are fertile throughout. He comes with his dog/brother who did not succeed several years earlier. On the other hand, is this not a satire of society which legislates and through societal pressure urges all to be in a "relationship"? David and his male friends are fairly lame socially as are the women sent to the island. It seems to be important to share a key characteristic with your potential mate i.e. you both limp, or get nosebleeds, or lisp. David tries to entice the violent "killer" in the group by pretending to be a sadist as she surely is. Since he likes short hair and she has short hair, perhaps it will be a success. During the "Hunt" the loners can earn an extra day by capturing or killing a loner who has escaped to the forest. I see lots of parallels to our own existence including people who pair off because they must claiming to be "in love" rather than saying that they cannot live/ or in our case live as comfortably. Very, very creepy, depressing movie albeit with a strange yet uplifting ending…maybe.
