Chief Chick Comments

Poignant Drama about a difficult romance between a sales clerk at a New York department store and a well to do married woman, Carol, who comes in to buy her daughter a Christmas present. The filming is beautiful and authentic and is set in the year Ike was first elected, 1952. Rooney Mara gives a compelling performance and Cate Blanchett as Carol is more beautiful than you can imagine. Of course, her performance, too, is magnificent. At first, she made me dislike Carol a bit, but eventually you see the life Carol has been living and understand more. Carol has a daughter and a rich husband who continues to be possessively in love with her. Therese, Mara, has a fiancé but cannot commit. When they leave together, you have a premonition things will not go well. Without ruining the story, I would say that the ending is a bit anti climactic. Yet, eventually understandable. You must see this film. While men may not think they want to see a movie about a lesbian love affair, the film is very, very good! I felt I was in 1952 and I assure you, I do not remember 1952!
