Chief Chick Comments

Dido is the daughter of a distinguished Royal Navy Admiral who fell in love with her mother, a slave aboard a Spanish slave ship. He saves her from the slums and takes her to live with his Uncle, Lord Mansfield, who is the highest Judge in England. She grows up with her cousin, also a niece of Lord Mansfield, whose father has abandoned her without dowry. Belle lives under an interesting set of rules yet is loved by her family. As she and her cousin reach the age of marriage, it is assumed that Dido will not marry but that her cousin must in order to secure her place in society as she has no dowry. Dido, on the other hand, has a large dowry left by her father. Furthermore, her Uncle, Lord Mansfield, has before him the appeal of a case regarding the drowning of slaves aboard a ship headed for England. Liberal young men urge the country to reject treating slaves as property. This movie is beautiful, dramatic, riveting, and well acted. I loved it and expect to see it again.
