Michael Keaton's career is officially resurrected! After being nominated for an Academy Award for best actor, I did not know when we would see him again. In Spotlight, he plays Robby Robinson head of the investigative unit which is called "Spotlight" for the Boston Globe. When the new editor arrives( played by Liev Schreiber, who is not Catholic), he wonders about the follow up to a columnist's comments about an abusive priest. Their investigation ultimately lead to uncovering massive coverups which reach all the way to the top of the Boston Archdiocese. While statistics shows all religions suffer from this problem, the large bureaucracy of the Catholic Church was able to hide it, in Boston as well as other places, for many years by transferring abusive priests from parish to parish. How the story unfolded in a city where 53% of the Boston Globe readers are Catholic is fascinating. I thought the Boston accents were subtle but effective especially for Keaton and Ruffalo. This is a class movie about a disturbing subject about which we now know much more.
