Many will remember the early 70's when Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky in Iceland for the world championship of chess. This movie looks behind the scenes at the craziness behind the match. Perhaps to be a chess champion requires that you be a genius with paranoid flaws. Both Spassky and especially Fischer displayed odd behavior. Never-the-less, whether you know the outcome or not, you will be interested in how Fischer's life as a chess master unfolded. Tobey Maguire is quite good as Fischer and Liev Schreiber as Spasky is likewise very, very good. Supported, perhaps enabled by lawyer Paul Marshall and Father Bill Lombardy, Fischer takes on the world of chess which is dominated by the Soviets. The government and ultimately most Americans view this rivalry as indicative of the Cold War. While Fischer died in 2008, the essence of his fame is explored in this well written and acted movie. Even if you do not play chess, I think you can appreciate the drama.
