A very realistic World War I movie that follows the life of Paul Bäumer while he was in the trenches in France. Emotionally powerful, difficult to watch.

Chief Chick Comments

"Strong bloody war images and gory violence" That summarizes the movie all too well, so it is clearly only for guys who like war, death, and destruction. However, the movie is extremely well made. Very realistic, great acting, profoundly emotional. No surprise that it gathered Oscar nominations for cinematography, makeup, and visual effects. It is an excellent antiwar movie, as it clearly portrays the pointlessness of war, especially WWI. The original title "Im Westen Nichts Neues" better translates as "In the west, nothing new." Sad, but so true. For the typical soldier every day of the war was the same - mud, trenches, terrifying artillery and machine gun fire, and dead and dying soldiers. If you choose to watch it, you will want to do so on a small screen.
