New version of this musical written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim which takes place in 1957 in Manhattan at the site of the neighborhood being demolished for Lincoln Center. Directed by Stephen Spielberg with a reprise appearance by Rita Moreno who won an Oscar for her original performance in 1961. Tony and Maria fall in love but are from two different cultures...in 1957 Manhattan. Two gangs, The Jets and the Sharks are at war for turf. Tony from one and Maria from the other. Perhaps not as good as the 1961 version starring Natalie Wood. Beautiful, beautiful music! Yes, this is a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. NOTE: After interesting comments from Members of ChicksFlicks, I re-evaluated my ratings and reduced them a bit for good reasons I missed the first time around. Read the members reviews on our site!

Not idealistic in its romances between Tony and Maria, and Anita and Bernardo, like the 1961 version was.

Let me start by saying the original West Side Story is an all time fav of mine. And I'm a lover of musicals. But for the life of me, I can't wrap my arms around this the same way I did the original. IMHO, there was no chemistry between the new Maria and Tony. Rita Moreno was in the movie as Doc's wife, which seemed weird and upon realizing she was Executive Producer added a 'well let's put her in the movie somewhere' reasoning. The times they spoke Puerto Rican did not bother me at all...but what did was the lack of subtitles so I didn't have a clue what was being said. Yeh, you could guess but it seemed rude to not clue us into that dialogue. And finally, my fav song of the whole musical was not song by Tony & Maria, as in the original and as it should've been. "There's a Place for Us" was sung by Rita Moreno --- she sang it ok (for her age), but it lacked the effect felt from the original. The dancing was good and true to the original -- which I was very glad to see. Overall, I was disappointed in this remake, which once again proves that remaking such a classic should perhaps not be done.....My thoughts only.
