Chief Chick Comments

Until today I had never read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë or seen the movie as I had imagined it quite sad. I am happy to say that while sad, the story is compelling even in this 1943 version starring Orson Welles and Jane Fontaine-both still young. Jane is an orphan and at first is raised by Aunt Reed who detests her and treats her accordingly, she then is sent to a home for orphans which is very hard. I was interested to see Elizabeth Taylor play her only friend at the school. Eventually, she matures and becomes a governess to a young French girl, Adele, who is the ward of Edward Rochester, the absent, rich, and abrupt owner of Thornfield. I was, in fact, surprised by the course the story unfolds and highly recommend it. This movie is in black and white which seems highly appropriate.
