Chief Chick Comments

Christopher Plummer is always worth a look when he stars in a new movie. He plays Kaiser Wilhelm who is exiled in Belgium in a very nice home with lots of servants and his younger second wife. Captain Brandt arrives to take over security for the aging Kaiser ( who really did live until 1941 without ever returning to Berlin). Brandt meets Mieke, a new maid with a secret, and they begin a somewhat torrid affair. The screenplay as it relates to romance is very male oriented. I find it hard to buy, but decided to go along with it anyway. While the suspense and story are not perfect, the performances my Plummer, Lily James (Cinderella and Downton Abbey), McTeer as well as Courtney is quite good. The title of the film, The Exception, is a debate between the two lovers about whether the Nazi SS is the exception or the rule to crimes against humanity. Today we know that it is the rule and are characters come to that conclusion as well.
