Chief Chick Comments

A thoughtful, meditative movie of the final years of Van Gogh's life in Arles (South of France) where he painted prolifically but was considered mad by many. His friendship with Gauguin heartened him and the love of his brother, Theo, a rock upon which to stand. Willem Dafoe is nominated in the Best Actor category for the Academy Awards. His is a steady, inspired performance of the painter who never sold a painting during his lifetime. The light and scenery are inspirational especially of Van Gogh's many paintings - Sunflowers, a fine example. This movie suggests an alternative story to the oft told suicide of Van Gogh. Of course, no one knows. I recommend it for a slow afternoon or evening. Wonderful performances.
