Ablations is a French film that recently screened at the Chicago International Film Festival in the New Directors category. Although it didn't win any awards, it is a film worth giving up 90 minutes on a week night to watch. Pastor, a pharmaceutical salesman, who is married with two children, awakes in his posh hotel room wearing his suit from the night before. He notices a big blood stain on his shirt, and when he removes the shirt he sees a large bandage covering his lower back. In a panic, Pastor visits his mistress, a doctor, and she performs a CT scan, which reveals that he has indeed lost a kidney. Here Ablations splits into two parallel narratives: one character's quest to retrieve his organ, and the mission of others to steal organs. These dueling stories take us to the dark outskirts of the developed world where a gray area forms and we no longer know who is good and who is evil. Ultimately, the film produces an understated narrative, on human trafficking and the illegal pilfering of organs, that is both quietly uplifting and morose. This psychological thriller, with surrealistic dream sequences, and very few laughs, moves quickly, leaving the question, how much do we need to be whole?
