Young Astrid lives with her beautiful but deadly mother, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, when Mom is convicted of murdering her latest boyfriend. Astrid lives in a series of foster homes and foster facilities, but finds there is trouble in each one. She does meet a fellow artist at the youth facility but is then sent off to live with an actress and her producer husband. Reneé Zellweger plays the actress who becomes depressed after meeting Astrid's mother during a prison visit. There is some closure at the end, but the movie is "dark" even if it is filmed in sunny California. Alison Lohman is quite good and quite beautiful as Astrid over a 3-4 year period. Worth a look
