Musically, I dislike two things; one of which is drum solos. I also hate bullies and especially sadists. All of this is part of Whiplash as Andrew Neimann, a drummer, in his first year is promoted to the top jazz ensemble at his music conservatory in New York City. J K Simmons plays Fletcher, the director, who persecutes the ensemble members mercilessly and is very, very cruel. He believes, incorrectly I think, that greatness comes from extreme treatment. I agree that tribulations have the potential to make one very good. However, I disagree that sadism is needed for greatness to emerge. At any rate, J K Simmons is nominated for a best supporting actor Academy Award. Until recently, in addition to acting Simmons was doing Farmer's Insurance commercials. He is much better suited to serious acting. I expect he will win.
