Chief Chick Comments

This movie based on Bill Bryson's book of the same name, was written when Bryson was 46 years old and probably was published a year or two after the experience. Redford and Nolte, both in their 70's, still make it work since anyone not under 40 would find walking the Appalachian Trail immensely difficult. Redford plays Bryson, the best selling author, and Nolte his high school friend from Des Moines Iowa. Bryson now living in New Hampshire is married to Catherine, his British wife played by Emma Thompson. She is dead set against this adventure but insists Bryson have a companion. He ends up with Stephen Katz who is overweight, destitute and a recovering alcoholic. Nolte is definitely the funniest part of this movie. Perhaps this should be rated a "4" for Stars and Chicks. I love Redford and Nolte and expected a bit more. Redford produced but did not write the screenplay. While it often does not follow the book exactly (for those of you who read the very funny book), it is enjoyable yet slow in parts. Just a bit too long. The scenery is lovely and the side characters actually fairly entertaining. Worth a look for sure…..Beware that the conclusion does not match up exactly with the book.
