Chief Chick Comments

Cranston, nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal, is fantastic as the real Dalton Trumbo. When the House Committee on Un American Activities begins to questions possible Communists from Hollywood, Trumbo and many writers end up on the Black List-banned from working for Hollywood. Trumbo, one of the best screenwriters at the time, organizes his fellow writers aided by a few A listers. Heddy Hopper, portrayed fearlessly by Helen Mirren, is vicious in her zeal to identify and "out" the communists. Some like John Wayne do not come out looking well. Hopper being the worst especially since her Hollywood column and a recent cover on Time Magazine have made reading her column a "must" for anyone interested in Hollywood and the movies. Cranston is truly magnificent and very deserving of his Oscar nomination. You may not know, as most people did not, that he won two Academy Awards for screenwriting under assumed names while he was blacklisted. One was the lovely Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in her first big role. Diane Lane is fabulous as he loving wife who somehow manages to keep the family together. Truly a wonderful movie with lessons for us all.
