Chief Chick Comments

I say "take a date" because most men can do the violence, gross stuff and nudity parts but may be indifferent on the love story. Ladies, I think you will love this movie (even though one woman I know said it was the worst movie she had ever seen). I liked it very, very much. Guillermo del Toro, amazingly, directs this strange yet fascinating story of Eliza who is a cleaning lady at a large scientific facility in 1960's Baltimore. She has been mute since birth and lives above a movie theater next to Giles, a struggling artist, played by Richard Jenkins. As usual Michael Shannon plays a really nasty authority figure at the lab. Throw in a group of Soviet spies and the Amphibian Man and you have a story. Shannon beats the South American creature even though he seems to be a bit human and can communicate. Eliza makes friends and starts to feed him boiled eggs which are a hit. The story takes a few nasty turns, but they are resolved in interesting fashion. I found it "fascinating". It is nominated for 13 Oscars including for best film, director, actress, actor, and supporting actress.
