Chief Chick Comments

Without Bill Murray, this movie is probably a dud. Some parts are very, very funny; some just humorous. Murray plays Richie Lanz, a third rate music agent from Van Nuys California where he lives in a cheap motel. He brings his assistant/talent to Afghanistan for a concert tour, but she abandons him out of fear. Eventually, he hears an extraordinary voice in a tribal village and sneaks her to Kabul for a spot in the Afghan Star tv talent contest. Of course, no woman has ever sung on Afghan TV and she will be subject to death by her people. The funniest parts of the movie are when Murray, who is a deal guy, decides to negotiate with the Afghans most of whom speak no English. Apparently, an Afghan woman did sing on Afghan Star and the movie is dedicated to her. I enjoyed the movie, but warn you it is no great work of art. Murray carries the show although you can enjoy Bruce Willis and Kate Hudson as well. Zooey Deschanel plays the singer who escapes early in the film. The young Afghan singer is played by Leem Lubany who has a lovely voice.
