Recommended by a teacher who shows this movie to her students, My Name is Khan is a moving story of Khan who is a Muslim born on the Indian subcontinent who eventually moves to the US with the sponsorship of his younger brother who is a successful businessman selling hair care products. Khan was taught by his loving mother that there are only two kinds of people in the world-good people and bad people. Therefore, religion, ethnicity etc are not determinants of who we are or should be. After his US move, Khan sells beauty products from hair salon to hair salon in San Francisco. He sees Mandira, a Hindu woman with a young son, and falls for her especially after she shows him much kindness. Unbelievably, she eventually falls for this good hearted man who is very, very intelligent. His brain power is masked by his Asperger's but he can famously "fix" anything and does so throughout the film. The film may not be realistic in many parts. We must wonder how he managed to get to a flooded church in the middle of a hurrican in Georgia when other rescuers cannot. However, the point is made well that this is a good man and the tragedy which found him was because of a label not who he was. Eventually, for reasons best explained by the film, Khan goes in search of the President to tell him "My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist" . The director does a good job of portraying famous folk in this movie. Again, although the logic is faulty often in the movie, the story is never-the-less gripping and the lesson important. Lucky students of this teacher. Lucky you if you see this film! Note: AmericanEast is another reviewed film about prejudice post 9/11. My Name is Khan is certainly more uplifting but both are worthy of a view.
