Minions is a prequel to Despicable Me which has been out for several years. And it is superior, in my view, to Despicable Me now that the focus is on the very entertaining minions themselves. Throughout history, the Minions have a hard time keeping their evil master alive from cave man days to the 20th century. The beginning of the movie showcases well some typical ancients. Eventually, they come to live in an Arctic cave but without much zest for life. One day, Kevin decides to venture out and find a villian for all the Minions to serve. He is joined by Bob, a guitar player, who does not realize he has volunteered, and Stuart who is desperate to volunteer along with his teddy bear. The story line is well done especially after the trio leave the Arctic. The three first find Australia but eventually land in New York where they learn that a Convention for Evil is about to take place in 1968 Orlando Florida. Setting the cartoon in 1968 makes it all the more entertaining as they arrive in a swamp where eventually the Orlando of today would be build. On the way, they meet an innocent-seeming family who turn out to be bank robbers. Finally, in Orlando things start to happen and they are hired by a very evil Scarlett Overkill. Fast forward to 1968 England where Scarlett Overkill the world's first super villainess wants Queen Elizabeth's crown very, very badly. Again, the year is 1968. If you were alive then, you will get many of the jokes others might miss. Non oldster adults will also get many jokes and kids laugh out loud at the minions themselves. The minions seem to speak many languages. I picked up French "pas de tout" ie "not at all", and some Spanish as well. This movie should do well internationally because of the various languages and the international background of the creators of the movie. If you stay for the credits, you will see many, many French and Spanish names. In short, the Minions are hilarious. Short movie but fun for everyone. The 60's music is especially enjoyable!
