Chief Chick Comments

Set in 1914 before the onset of World War I, Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician from Madras, India, writes to GH Hardy a Don at Cambridge University in England, in hopes of gaining his attention so that his theorems can be published. Sounds boring, doesn't it? Well, even if you do not know advanced mathematics, this story is somewhat compelling. Ramanujan leaves his wife and mother in Madras for several years while Hardy tries to understand him and force him to "prove" his theories. The explanation in the movie for two major theories, Prime Numbers and Partition Function, is actually somewhat understandable. Ramanujan was real and was not received well at Cambridge where he not only did not have a degree but was dark skinned. He and Hardy struggle but form a bond sometimes aided by one or two other Dons at Cambridge. It seems that Ramanujan, in fact, was perhaps the greatest mathematician of his generation, or would have been if time had allowed. Interesting story, wonderful acting. You will remember Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire
