Beach Boys…Great Music…Right? Well, do not expect to hear lots of Beach Boys hits in this movie which drags on for over two hours. Yes we hear a couple of partial hits and the theater may be crowded with the generation who grew up with the Beach Boys, but this movie is difficult to watch as well as boring. Paul Dano plays Brian Wilson as a young man (and does well at it); John Cusack is Brian as a 40-something psychotic, overmedicated has-been. We see Brian trying to buy a car and meeting Melinda Ledbetter who is a car salesman at a Cadillac dealership in Southern California. Brian asks her out but is under the watchful eye of Dr Eugene Landy(Paul Giamatti) and his minions. By watching the movie, you will have no idea what this apparently intelligent woman sees in this man who acts as if he has an IQ of about 75. Yet, we are meant to believe that she falls for him and then eventually saves his life along with the help of his maid. I blame the script. Yet, I am told by someone who knows the Wilsons that the story is largely true although Melinda played a much smaller part in Brian Wilson's rescue. Ok, but still watching this movie was excruciating; I looked at my watch about 25 times praying for the end. I advise you to wait for the DVD and fast forward through much of it. Watching both Cusack and Dano act out Wilson's psychosis is very tough and really not too believable. Don't bother.
