Chief Chick Comments

This very camp Wes Anderson movie is charming and the scenery, excess of famous faces, and humor make it a must see. Somewhat a story in a story, the faded hotel hosts a recovering writer played by Jude Law (later in life by Tom Wilkinson) and F Murray Abraham, the owner of the hotel and previously the young Zero, Gustav's protege and heir. Abraham tells the history of the now faded hotel to Jude Law who later writes a book about the exploits of Gustave and Zero. Tony Revolori plays the young Zero who falls for Agatha, the icer at the local patisserie. When the Duchess dies suddenly, Gustave is left an extremely valuable painting, The Boy With Apple. The Family is determined to keep it and threatens the executor of the estate, played by Jeff Goldblum. Gustave and Zero share many adventures until the final documents are uncovered! Enjoyable date movie!

I saw this movie with two friends when it first came out. Two of us loved it one of my friends thought it was confusing. (Really?) The actors are fabulous and the set depicts a time of years gone by (when the hotel flourished) that would have been facinating to experience first hand. Campy and fun!
