Chief Chick Comments

Colin Firth shines, almost always with his hat on, as Max Perkins, the editor who first published F Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway for Scribner's. Jude Law is the bigger than life Thomas Wolfe who came to Perkins attention after being rejected by all the other New York publishers. Wolfe is passionate and completely self-focused. He lives with Aline Bernstein, a married Broadway set designer, a few years older who believes in him and supports him while he writes his extremely long books. Look Homeward Angel was fairly long before Perkins and Wolfe worked to get it ready for publication, but Of Time and the River started as 5,000 pages! Perhaps the story is a bit long, but the relationship is very interesting as Perkins, at one point, virtually abandons his family of a wife and 5 daughters, to work with Wolfe on his second book. I enjoyed it, but it is a bit of a "thinking" film.
