One of my brothers said he loved the movie, the other "not so much" so caution with taking a date but probably ok for many men. Bathsheba Everdeen is an orphaned young woman working on her aunt's farm for the summer when the news arrives that an Uncle has left her his very grand farm indeed. She is determined to bring the farm back to its former glory and works alongside all the laborers including one who had courted her when she was penniless. The gentleman farmer next door proposes; then she meets a seemingly gallant military man who, we, the audience know, has a checkered past. This movie based on the Thomas Hardy novel is really a very fine rendition. Mulligan plays a fiesty Bathsheba, much more than Julie Christie in the 1967 movie of the same name. The scenery is lovely and the homes an upgrade over the original movie. I prefer the sassiness of this movie and the rapport between Bathsheba and the gentlmen. As the story progresses, you cannot be sure of the result; but you are rooting for certain outcomes. Script is quite good as it the cinematography. Lovely period middle class attire and a few handsome guys! See it!

It's classic Thomas Hardy - romantic and beautiful. The countryside scenes of Wessex are gorgeous, many of the men are easy to look at, and the ending is far more chicks flicks friendly than the actual book. A late 19th century story with a 21st century attitude.

A very "Jane Austen" movie! Excellent!!!!
