Chief Chick Comments

Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl) plays Newt Scamander, a British wizard, who comes to America to return a magical beast to its home. Unfortunately, he accidentally exchanges suitcases with a non-wizard, Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), who accidentally releases some of the magical beasts. Newt is obliged to retrieve them and heal Kowalski of his beast-inflicted wounds. But Newt stumbles into the American wizards and is apprehended, and temporarily taken in, by Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) for revealing magic to the non-magical world. Non-magical New York is plagued by an invisible force that wreaks havoc and Newt gets blamed for it. With so many interwoven plots going on, you might fear getting lost. No worries. The director interjects enough quiet periods to develop the characters, pique our interest, and help us stay grounded. We enjoyed every minute of the show, even though it lasts two hours. Wizard-loving fans will be glad to know that the ending sets us up for a sequel.
