Chief Chick Comments

Dom Hemingway is a minor level safe cracker who is released from 12 years in prison at the beginning of the movie. Things just go from bad to worse for him. He is pretty much a degenerate. The man for whom he covered for all the years in prison sends him a "get out of prison" present: two whores and a major supply of cocaine which you see him enjoying. Then he goes to the south of France to meet the man and get his reward which is apparently part of the spoils of the bank they robbed. Dom is an expert safe cracker; makes claims that there isn't a safe in the world he can't open. The man, Ivan Fontaine, sort of a Frenchified Russian gangster, gives Dom his payment: a million pounds. Then Dom, his friend Dickie, Ivan and three girls, one of them Ivan's girlfriend, Paulina, whom Dom is lusting after, all end up doing cocaine, drinking, swimming in the nude and then driving in a convertible on twisty roads. They have a wreck and the next thing you know, Dom is saving the life of one of the girls, not the girlfriend. This girl, Melody, tells him that he will have good luck because he saved her life. Ivan dies with some kind of piece of metal through his stomach and Dickie sees Paulina, the girlfriend leaving. Dom goes back to the house to find that she has stolen all his money. Next you see him in London at his now grown-up daughter's house that she shares with apparently several Senegalese and her son. She lets Dom recover from his car wreck injuries and then tells him to leave. She hates him for not being around while she was growing up, for being in prison when her mother, his beloved wife Keefie, died from cancer. Dom then decides to get in touch with the son of his former rival in gangsterdom, an incredibly unattractive young black man who now owns several night clubs. He, Freddie, tells Dom that he will give him a job if he can open the safe in his office in 10 minutes. If he can't, he will cut off his penis because years before Dom had killed Freddie's cat and Freddie is still mad about it. So, Dom does open the safe in the time limit despite having had enough beer to incapacitate anyone else. But, there's a trick: there is a safe within the safe. And since Dom didn't open that one, Freddie takes out his knife to do the deed. Just then the security firm breaks in because the safe's alarm had gone off. Dom and Dickie escape. Dom realizes he has no place to go, no money, no job, no nothing. But, after trying once more to reach his daughter, he is leaving his wife's grave where the grandson shows up, and after seeming to bond with the grandson, and he spies Paulina across a street. Is Dom's luck about to change?
