In some ways Clouds of Sils Maria is a multi layered movie with overlays of innuendo and meaning. Sils Maria is the small Swiss area where Maria Ender's mentor, Wilhelm Melchior, the playwright, lives with his wife, Rosa. Twenty years since he chose Enders to play the role of Sigrid in his play, Majola Snake, Maria is headed to Switzerland to accept a lifetime award on Melchior's behalf as he has become a recluse. While on her way there, he dies, and eventually she decides to go ahead despite some uncomfortable complications. Her assistant, played ably by Kristen Stewart as Val, is constantly calling and texting to make arrangements. While at the festivities, now more of a wake, Maria is asked to perform in the play once more but this time as the elder woman who commits suicide. She says no, but is eventually persuaded to play opposite a young American actress, Jo-Ann Ellis who sounds a bit like Lindsay Lohan. She decides at Rosa's invitation to stay at the Melchios's Swiss cottage to rest and practice her lines with the aid of Val who seems often to have an different interpretation of the meaning of the dialogue. While there, they have a chance to see the famous Maloja Snake which is a seldom seen cloud formation which inspired the original play. Both Binoche and Stewart are pretty good with Binoche turning in a superior performance. Beautiful scenery and room for your interpretation. Perhaps a bit too long.
