Chief Chick Comments

This movie stars Brendan Gleeson as James the local priest who is a widower with a grown daughter, Fiona. She comes for a visit with bandaged wrists from a suicide attempt just after James during confession is told by a parishioner that in one week he will kill James even though he is a good priest and an innocent man. He says that he is giving him a week to get his house in order. During the week, we see James with his daughter, trying to counsel and help the unusual inhabitants of the village, many of whom seem quite "off" mentally. James recognizes the voice but does nothing to try to dissuade the man who says he must kill an innocent priest because of the sins of a priest who molested the man in his early years. This movie is very thought provoking about the child abuse scandals and cover ups in the Catholic Church as well as the parallels to its title. Christ, an innocent man, was crucified for the sins of all others; James, an innocent Priest, is threatened with death for the sins of other priests. I recommend this thoughtful striking movie.
