Chief Chick Comments
Guy Trilby(Jason Batemen) is a 40 yr. old man who dropped out of 8th grade. Now a proofreader, he enters a national spelling bee competition. He is accompanied by a reporter (Kathryn Hahn) whose news site is sponsoring his effort. Guy is thoroughly obnoxious, using legal threats to compete. He also uses extreme gamesmanship as well as his spelling prowess to dominate his competition. On the way to the national finals, he meets a 10 yr old boy Chaitanya, a fellow competitor. Despite, Guy's obnoxious behavior the boy will not leave him alone. As the finals approach we learn more about why Guy is competing, and why he has such a chip on his shoulder. Something of a send up of the spelling bee world, the cast that includes Allison Janney is very strong. Bateman is very good as an obnoxious jerk, some will enjoy his extreme abrasiveness, but others, like me, will find it very off putting.
